Cough is a reflex response to airway irritation It is triggered by stimulation of airway cough receptors either by irritants or by conditions that cause airway distortion Cough can be acute (lasting less than 3 weeks) subacute (lasting 3–8 weeks) or chronic (lasting more than 8 weeks) Acute cough is most commonly caused by a viral upper respiratory tract infection.

How you can treat a cough yourself There&#39s usually no need to see a GP You should rest drink plenty of fluids You could also try paracetamol or ibuprofen to treat any pain hot lemon and honey (not suitable for babies under 1 year old) a herbal medicine called pelargonium (suitable for people aged 12 or over) But there&#39s limited evidence to show these work.

The differential diagnosis of cough is wide ranging and includes many diseases — the cause is determined by clinical features medical history elimination of alternative causes and the response to targeted therapies where appropriate The duration of a cough at presentation can help guide diagnosis however All coughs are acute at onset It is not possible to predict which cough will persist into subacute and chronic stages For people with a cute cough (less than 3 weeks&#39 duration) Assess whether the person has clinical features of the most common cause Upper respiratory tract infection — suggested by cough with or without sputum general malaise and fever For people with subacute cough (3–8 weeks&#39 duration) Assess whether the person has clinical features of the most common cause Postinfectious cough — for example after infections with Mycoplasma pneumonia or Bordetella pertussis.
